In several civilizations, we find the conception that the spirit transcends and differentiates itself from matter. Religious practitioners in Tibet, for example, hold to the belief in a spiritual principle endowed with the ability to manifest mental forms perceptible to everyone, known as Tulpas.

Whenever we imagine legendary creatures, it's common to think of hippogriffs, cyclops, ghosts, zombies, and other favorites of writers over the years. However, there are some that rarely receive attention and remain unknown for most mythology enthusiasts. In the vast universe of psychology and the occult, there exists a fascinating phenomenon known as "Tulpa". These are creations of the human mind that, according to reports and beliefs, can acquire an independent and even physical existence. The concept of tulpa has ancient roots, but has received increasing interest in academic circles and contemporary popular culture.

Origins and History

Until the end of the 20th century, Tibet, especially its capital, Lhasa or Lhassa, remained inaccessible to foreigners. Few travelers were lucky enough to enter and absorb the teachings of the Tibetan religious people, the Lamas. Alexandra David-Néel was one of those privileged people, witnessing singular phenomena. After a prolonged stay in the foothills of the Himalayas, in June 1912, this 44-year-old French citizen arrived in the "Highlands" or Tibet itself. She recorded her experiences of this and subsequent journeys in numerous writings, including her work "A Parisian's Trip to Lhasa", published in 1927. Several passages in this book discuss an extraordinary phenomenon known to Tibetans as Tulpa.

The word "Tulpa" refers to mental forms created by intense concentration and the practice of visualization. It is believed that Buddhist practitioners can give life to these mental forms, giving them distinct characteristics and personalities. Around 1890, long before the book became public knowledge, scholars of Theosophy began a study of the already widespread concept of thought forms. This new idea encompassed any manifestation, animated or not, that emerged from a thought, whether intentional or not. Although not yet directly related to Tulpas, these thought forms were described in a manner very similar to the concept later attributed to Tibetan Tulpas.

According to Theosophy, thought forms or tulpas are mental creations of objects or beings, using spiritual or mental powers to shape fluidic or astral matter, according to the nature of thought. However, the concept of creating beings through the power of the mind is not exclusive to Buddhism. Esoteric traditions in various cultures also have stories about the manifestation of entities through human will.

The Creation of Tulpa

Creating a Tulpa usually involves a prolonged and concentrated mental process. The practitioners usually begin with a clear, detailed visualization of the shape and features of the being they wish to manifest. Over time, through meditation and repetition of the visualization process, the Tulpa is believed to begin to gain its own consciousness and independence.

When created, it fulfills its creator's wishes for a limited period, because, like a child, the Tulpa grows and seeks its autonomy. This insurgency can even result in the death of the person who conceived it. In its initial phase, the creature — whose form may vary according to the creator's wishes — carries out a variety of orders and subsists on people's belief in its existence. A comparison can be made with the bogeyman, a creature that we stop believing in as we grow up, and, consequently, we stop feeling its presence (or maybe not).

Tulpa in Modern Culture

Although the concept of Tulpa has its roots in ancient spiritual traditions, it also found its way into modern popular culture. The phenomenon has been explored in various forms of media, including literature, films and video games. Fictional narratives often feature characters who take on a life of their own through the power of the mind, often exploring the complexities of creation and responsibility. Furthermore, the phenomenon has also attracted academic interest, with researchers and psychologists trying to better understand the mechanisms behind Tulpa creation and its impact on the human psyche.

The Debate on the Reality of Tulpas

While some practitioners claim to have real experiences with tulpas, others remain skeptical, suggesting that these manifestations are simply products of human imagination. The debate about the reality of Tulpas continues to rage, with varying opinions among scholars and practitioners. The concept of Tulpa offers a fascinating window into the nature of the human mind and its ability to create and manifest inner realities. Whether figments of the imagination or independent entities, Tulpas continue to intrigue and inspire those who explore the limits of consciousness and mental creation.
