Tension in Lebanon: Palestinians protest at the US embassy after attack on Gaza hospital

The Middle East, a region historically marked by conflicts and tense politics, faces yet another episode of instability this Wednesday morning (18). This time, tension focuses on Lebanon, where Palestinian protesters gathered outside the United States embassy in the country, in protest against the recent attack on a hospital in Gaza which left hundreds of people dead.
The Attack on the Hospital in Gaza
The trigger for the protests in Lebanon was the attack on a hospital Hospital Al-Ahli Arabi, located in the city of Gaza, in the Gaza Strip, which occurred on Tuesday night (17). According to reports, the hospital was full of patients and medical staff and thousands of people who sought shelter in the areas around the hospital unit in an attempt to protect themselves from the bombings carried out by Israeli forces.
The authorities of Gaza blame Israel for the attack, while Israelis claim the Islamic Jihad group is the perpetrator of the incident. So far, there is no agreement on the precise number of victims, but according to a statement released by the Gaza Ministry of Health, which is run by the extremist group Hamas, on Wednesday morning, 471 Palestinians were killed in the explosion that occurred at al-Ahli hospital. However, there is still no consensus on this incident.
Protests at the US Embassy in Lebanon
Following the attack on the hospital in Gaza, Palestinian protesters and supporters gathered in front of the American Embassy in Lebanon, located in the capital, Beirut. Protesters expressed their outrage at both the attack on the hospital and the US support for Israel, as reported by the US news agency Associated Press.
In response, Lebanese security forces dispersed a group of around 100 protesters who gathered in front of the embassy. To contain the protesters, they used tear gas and water cannons. This conflict occurred at a time when United States President Joe Biden was visiting Israel and reaffirming US support for the country. Historically, the United States has been an ally of Israel, providing them with substantial political and military support.
The United States Department of State, on Tuesday, had already issued a statement, advising American citizens to avoid traveling to Lebanon. Additionally, US authorities allowed the voluntary departure of family members and some embassy staff in Beirut due to the highly unpredictable security situation.
The Complex Dynamics in Lebanon
Lebanon, a country that has faced its own political and economic challenges, has a long history of hosting Palestinian refugees who have fled conflicts in the region. The presence of a large Palestinian population in Lebanon, along with the influence of political and military groups, makes the country susceptible to fluctuations in the status of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
