The technology scene has been buzzing in recent days with surprising news involving two prominent figures: Sam Altman and OpenAI. The turnaround began with the announcement that Sam Altman, well-known entrepreneur, co-founder and former president of OpenAI, is joining technology giant Microsoft to lead an Artificial Intelligence (AI) research team.
Microsoft hired Altman, after his dismissal as CEO of the AI company, in a tumultuous coup that took place during a meeting last Friday (17). The announcement was made by the company's executive president, Satya Nadella, in the early hours of this Monday (20), Brasília time. Meanwhile, the company ChatGPT is about to have its third CEO in just two days.
This change represents yet another significant turnaround in the power scenario related to artificial intelligence, one of the most impactful technologies of recent decades. Greg Brockman, another co-founder and key engineer behind the artificial intelligence company's successes, also stepped down as president of OpenAI, is joining Microsoft (MSFT), following Altman's dismissal.
Emmett Shear, former CEO of Amazon's Twitch streaming service, will temporarily take on the role of CEO at OpenAI. He succeeds Mira Murati, who held the position internally when Altman was fired. Murati will resume her role as chief technology officer at OpenAI.
Altman Microsoft
With a notable investment of US$13 billion, Microsoft emerges as OpenAI's main investor. Altman's recent addition to the team represents a significant boost, given his crucial role in the development of OpenAI. Altman brings with him extensive experience in entrepreneurship and strategic acumen in the field of artificial intelligence and technology.
Altman, in his official statement, expressed excitement for the opportunity to collaborate with Microsoft on innovative initiatives. He highlighted Microsoft's commitment to ethics in AI and its vision to contribute to the next era of digital transformation. The partnership promotes investment in research and development in artificial intelligence, machine learning and emerging technologies.
OpenAI
Altman, along with tycoon Elon Musk, is one of the founders of OpenAI. The company began in 2015 initially as a non-profit organization and underwent restructuring in 2019, adopting an investment capture model. In 2022, OpenAI gained global prominence with two of its innovative products: ChatGPT, a conversational robot, and DALL-E, a drawing robot. These tools have become real features, attracting the attention of notable companies, including Microsoft.
OpenAI dismissal
In the statement that made Altman's resignation and departure from the company's board official, criticism of the executive was expressed. The note alleges that, after an investigation, the board concluded that Altman was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, thereby undermining his ability to clearly define his responsibilities. Additionally, the board also expressed a lack of confidence in the leadership of OpenAI's co-founder.
As a result of Altman's firing, some executives, including Brockman, also resigned. On Friday, Brockman posted, "Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today."
OpenAI in Search of Stability
While Microsoft celebrates the arrival of Sam Altman, OpenAI faces an abrupt change in leadership. The organization announced its third CEO in just three days, surprising the technology community and industry observers.
Emmett Shear, former CEO of Amazon's Twitch streaming service, will temporarily take on the role of CEO at OpenAI. He succeeds Mira Murati, who held the position since Altman's dismissal. She will return to her previous role as the company's chief technology officer. Shear announced on Monday his intention to hire an independent investigator to investigate the circumstances that led to Altman's departure and committed to reforming the management team within the next 30 days.
The Future of OpenAI and Microsoft
As Microsoft solidifies its position as a leading player in the field of artificial intelligence with the arrival of Sam Altman, OpenAI faces the challenge of finding stability and direction under new leadership. The technology community will be closely watching the development of these events and the implications for the future of technological innovation, AI ethics and strategic collaborations on the global stage.
