Study reveals 8 lifestyle changes that could extend your life by 20 years
According to research, it is possible to extend your life expectancy by more than 20 years by adopting eight changes in your way of living. However, given the observational nature of the study, a conclusive link between the identified elements and disparities in life expectancy cannot be established.
Individuals who adopt eight therapeutic lifestyle principles can increase their life expectancy by more than 20 years.
In pursuit of a long and healthy life, many people are constantly looking for ways to improve your lifestyle. A new study, carried out by a team of US Department of Veterans Affairs researchers, brought to light surprising findings about how certain lifestyle changes can have a significant impact on life expectancy.
According to the research, it is possible to increase your life expectancy by more than 20 years by incorporating eight lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy and getting enough sleep. Even postponing the adoption of healthier habits until middle age, the study revealed that implementing small changes could already result in a significant increase in people's longevity.
"Our research findings suggest that adopting a healthy lifestyle is important for both public health and personal well-being," said Xuan-Mai T Nguyen, a health sciences expert and one of the participants in the study. The sooner the better, but even if you make just one small change in your 40s, 50s or 60s, it's still beneficial," she added.
Study
The search was presented during the annual meeting of the American Nutrition Society in Boston and was based on information from screenings and medical records obtained between the years 2011 and 2019. These records encompass a large sample, with more than 700,000 US veterans, whose ages ranged from 40 to 99 years. These veterans were enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs' Million Veteran Program.
Nguyen and his team followed a detailed analysis of the data, seeking to identify which lifestyle elements were correlated with greater longevity. Within the scope of the project, medical records were collected that documented the deaths of 33,375 participants over the period of investigation. The researchers also emphasized that, when taken together, the various lifestyle factors can exert a significant influence on life expectancy, potentially adding decades to an individual's life.
The survey also pointed out that male and female individuals who adopt eight therapeutic lifestyle principles can enjoy an increase of 23.7 and 22.6 years in life expectancy at age 40, respectively, compared to those who do not adopt such principles. It was evident that physical inactivity, opioid use and smoking had more robust associations with premature mortality. During the study period, participants involved in the lifestyle practices created a 30% to 45% higher risk of death compared to others.
In contrast, in this study, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, insufficient sleep quality, and premature dieting correlated with a 20% increase in risk of mortality during the analyzed period. However, it is important to highlight that the observational nature of the study prevents the confirmation of a causal relationship between the identified factors and discrepancies in longevity.
Although the results indicate a strong link between the therapeutic lifestyle principles adopted and life expectancy, it is important to emphasize that, due to the observational nature of the study, it is not possible to establish a definitive causal relationship between the identified factors and the discrepancies in the Life expectancy.
Lifestyle changes
1. Balanced Feed: Research highlights the importance of a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy vitamins. Eating a nutritious diet not only helps you maintain a healthy weight, but also reduces your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic conditions.
2. Regular Exercises: The regular practice of physical activities, such as walking, running, swimming or weight training, is essential for maintaining health. The study highlights that regular physical activity not only strengthens the body, but also contributes to mental health, anxiety or risk of depression and anxiety.
3. Stress Management: Effective stress management is essential for a long life. Practices such as meditation, yoga, and exercise techniques can help reduce stress levels and promote emotional well-being.
4. Quality Sleep: Sleep quality plays a crucial role in overall health. The study emphasizes the importance of establishing healthy and consistent sleep routines, which can improve cognitive function, the immune system and cardiovascular health.
5. Social Relationships: Maintaining social connections is another crucial factor. Having strong relationships with friends, family and community can reduce the risk of depression and isolation, promoting a longer and more fulfilling life.
6. Avoid Smoking and Excessive Alcohol Consumption: The study reinforces the dangers of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Both habits are associated with a range of health problems, including cancer, respiratory and liver disease.
7. Proper hydration:Adequate water intake is often underestimated, yet it plays a vital role in overall health. Proper hydration maintains the proper functioning of organs, improves the skin and promotes the elimination of toxins from the body.
8. Search for Challenges and Continuous Learning:Staying mentally active throughout life is a factor that is often overlooked. The study points out that the pursuit of intellectual challenges and continuous learning can keep the brain healthy and reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline.
