In an important milestone in the fight against racism in sport, Spanish justice sentenced the racist attackers of Brazilian player Vinicius Jr. to eight months in prison. The case, which gained worldwide attention, occurred during a match between Real Madrid and Valencia, when Vinicius Jr. was the target of racist insults from the opposing fans. This is the first conviction for a case of racism in football in Spain. Furthermore, it is also the first in a series of incidents of racism that occurred last year against the Brazilian player, who plays for Real Madrid in the European country.

The Case

The incident occurred last year in a La Liga match, when fans of the Valencia team hurled racist insults at Real Madrid striker Vinicius Jr.. Vini Jr. immediately complained to the referee after being insulted by fans, resulting in the game being stopped. There was confusion and then a Valencia player put an armbar on Vinicius Jr., who, when he freed himself, hit another opponent in the face and was sent off. At the end of the match, the Brazilian complained, accusing the Spanish league of several cases of racism that he had suffered in recent months, but was harshly criticized by the president of La Liga, Javier Tebas.

The insults to the Brazilian player, which included monkey impersonations and racially charged insults, were widely condemned by players, clubs, sporting organizations and the general public. Tebas, faced with the worldwide repercussions of the case that generated a huge debate about racism in football, ended up backing down and apologizing to the player. At the time, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized the episode and called for more anti-racist actions in football, while the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, also showed solidarity with the player Vinicius Jr.

The investigation

The investigation was carried out quickly by the Spanish authorities, who identified those responsible through video recordings and testimonies. The collaboration between the club, the police and the Spanish league were crucial in identifying the attackers. The Spanish police took action and managed to identify and detain the fans responsible for the racist insults at the Mestalla stadium, in addition to those who, months earlier, hung a black doll wearing Vinicius Jr.'s shirt on a viaduct in Madrid.

The Verdict

Brazilian player Vinicius Junior joined La Liga, Real Madrid and the RFEF to take the case to court. During the hearing, the defendants read a letter of apology. The court considered the acts a hate crime, highlighting the seriousness of the racist insults made against the player. The fans were condemned for committing a "crime against moral integrity" with the "aggravating circumstance of racial discrimination." After an agreement reached during the preliminary investigation, the initial 12-month sentence was reduced by a third.

The three Valencia fans who called Vinicius Jr. a "monkey", in addition to the prison sentence, are also banned from entering any football stadium in Spain for a period of three years, later reduced to two years. One of the fans was identified by Vinicius Jr. himself after the game, while the other two were found by the police using cameras installed in the stadium. So far, the lawyers for those convicted have not said whether they will appeal the sentence.

Repercussion

The conviction was welcomed by sports and human rights entities. In an official statement, the Spanish Football Federation reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating racism in stadiums. Real Madrid also spoke out, emphasizing the need for zero tolerance towards any form of discrimination. La Liga, the Spanish professional football league, which participated in the accusation, released a statement stating that this is the first conviction in Spain for racist insults in football.

The La Liga president said the decision is great news for combating racism in Spain, as it helps to correct the shameful mistake suffered by Vinicius Jr and sends a clear message to individuals who hurl abuse in football stadiums. Vinicius Jr., on his social networks, expressed relief and hope that this is a significant step in the fight against racism in football. “I hope this case serves as an example and that acts like these are not repeated. The fight against racism needs to be constant and firm”, declared the player.

The future

Tebas declared that the League will identify and report those responsible, with criminal consequences. He recognizes that there may be frustration with the delay in sentencing, but this shows that Spain guarantees judicial integrity. He also highlighted that La Liga will respect the pace of justice, but again asked that legislation evolve to give the entity sanctioning powers that accelerate the fight against racism. Real Madrid also stated that it will continue to work to protect the club's values and eliminate any racist behavior in the world of football and sport.

The Spanish justice system has taken an important step, but a continued effort is needed from everyone involved in the sport to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all players, regardless of their race or origin. The case reinforces the importance of strict policies and constant vigilance to prevent and punish acts of racism, not just in football, but in all spheres of society. Sport, as a global platform, plays a crucial role in promoting equality and combating prejudice, and cases like Vinicius Jr. show that justice can and should be done.
