Sad Goodbye: Actress Elizangela dies at 68 in Rio de Janeiro
Second Information from the municipal administration of Guapimirim (RJ), the 68-year-old actress was taken to the José Rabello de Mello Municipal Hospital after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest, with prior care from the SAMU team.

One of the most beloved personalities on Brazilian television, the renowned actress Elizangela, passed away at the age of 68 this Friday (3) in Guapimirim, in the interior of the state of Rio, as informed by the local administration. According to the Municipality of Guapimirim, the actress felt unwell and was taken to the José Rabello de Mello Municipal Hospital with a cardiorespiratory arrest, after assistance from SAMU. The medical team made attempts to resuscitate both the transfer and the unit, but were unsuccessful.
“The Municipality of Guapimirim regrets the death of the renowned actress. This is the second time that the municipality's health system has served Elizangela. At first, Elizângela was admitted to the unit with serious respiratory problems, and after a few weeks, she was discharged from the unit”, according to the organization's statement.
Hospitalization due to Covid-19
Last year, the actress was hospitalized in the same municipality in critical condition due to respiratory complications resulting from Covid-19, requiring intubation. According to information from the city hall, she arrived at the José Rabello de Mello Municipal Hospital in very precarious conditions and there was an almost immediate need for intubation. The hospital's press office stated that the artist was expressly against vaccination and that she had not received any dose of the vaccine.
At the time, her press office had stated that the actress was "very rebellious" and radically against vaccination, which she frequently shared on her social networks. This made her a controversial figure amid the pandemic scenario, where vaccination is considered the best strategy to combat the spread of the virus. The actress, after her hospitalization, was discharged from the hospital, but with the need to continue using oxygen support.
A Brilliant Career on Stage and Screen
Born in 1954, in Rio de Janeiro, Elizângela do Amaral Vergueiro, known simply as Elizangela, began her career in theater and television at a young age. His career on television began on "Clube do Guri" on TV Tupi Rio, and in 1965, he took over the presentation of the program "Essa Gente Inocente" on TV Excelsior do Rio. At Globo Rio, he made his debut in 1966 on "Club Captain Furacão", a children's program on Globo Rio led by Pietro Mário. It was in the 70s that he took his first steps as an actor in soap operas. Her talent, charisma and versatility made her one of the most respected actresses in the country.
Soon after, she began her career as the presenter of another variety program, called 'Show da Cidade', alongside journalists Edna Savaget and Guima (José Antônio de Lima Guimarães). Even with this new venture, Elizangela did not abandon 'Capitão Furacão', which was shown immediately before on the schedule.
In 1969, while still working on 'Capitão Furacão', Elizangela received an invitation to act in a feature film entitled 'Quelé do Pajeú', which was directed by Anselmo Duarte. The following year, she shone on the big screen in yet another film, 'O Enterro da Cafetina', an adaptation of several stories by Marcos Rey. In 1971, Elizangela took on her third film role, starring in 'Vale do Canaã', inspired by a short story by Graça Aranha.
She began her journey as a singer without great expectations. His desire was simple: to sing for love, as he had a deep appreciation for music, without ever considering the idea of pursuing a professional career in the field. However, as people praised her voice, she decided to give this new path a try. Her career as an actress was in an unstable period, which motivated her to explore new opportunities. In 1978, she entered the studio and recorded a simple single, entitled "Elizângela". This single included the songs "Ele ou Você" and "Pertinho de Você", being distributed by the record label RCA not only throughout Brazil, but also abroad.
Elizangela gained prominence in several Rede Globo productions, becoming an iconic figure in soap operas, miniseries and films. Among her memorable roles are characters such as Marilda from "Roque Santeiro", Patrícia from "Locomotives", Rosemary Pontes from "Stone upon stone", Magnólia from "For love", the fun Noêmia from "The Clone", Djenane from "Lady of Destiny", Shirley Miranda from "Snakes and Lizards", Cilene from "The favorite", the fun Nicole in the remake of Ti Ti Ti, Aurora Duarte, Bibi Perigosa's mother in the soap opera "The strength of wanting", and many others who have left their mark on generations of viewers.
