Presenter Faustão undergoes successful heart transplant, says hospital
The procedure was carried out earlier this Sunday afternoon (27) and lasted about 2:30 am; Fausto Silva is still hospitalized in the UTI.

The host Fausto Silva, popularly known as Faustão, underwent a heart transplant on Sunday, this Sunday (27th) according to a medical statement issued by the Albert Einstein Hospital, in the city of São Paulo, where he has been hospitalized since August 5th. According to the hospital, the surgery was performed in the early afternoon and lasted approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. The bulletin also states that the procedure was successful, but Fausto Silva remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at this time, as the next few hours are crucial to monitor the adaptation of the new organ and control any possible elimination.
Faustão Health Drama
The presenter's hospitalization occurred due to a heart failure. The first medical statement about his state of health, issued by the hospital's press team, said that he "was stable and under intensive care.". However, on August 20, the hospital issued a new statement, reporting that Faustão's health had deteriorated, requiring a heart transplant.
The note also mentioned that due to the seriousness of the case the presenter had been included with priority on the waiting list of the public health system administered by the São Paulo State Health Department, to receive a new heart. In addition, the doctors informed that, at that moment, he was undergoing dialysis sessions and taking medication to help his heart function properly.
This is not the first procedure the presenter has undergone, that is, Faustão has already faced several health challenges throughout his life. In 2009, he underwent a gastric bypass bariatric surgery, resulting in a loss of more than 40 kg. Subsequently, he also lost 26 kg by treating lymphatic edema in one of his legs. In 2018, underwent an angioplasty, a medical procedure to unclog the coronary arteries using a catheter. And, in December 2020, Fausto needed surgery to implant a pacemaker.
Faustão condition
Faustão's situation brought to light several questions about this disease that affects about 3 million Brazilians, according to data from the Brazilian Society of Cardiology. Heart failure is characterized by the inability of the heart to develop its function properly, resulting in difficulty pumping blood to other organs and tissues, thus compromising the overall health of the body and the patient's quality of life.
The causes of this condition are remarkably diverse and, in general terms, heart failure represents the advanced stage of various conditions that affect the heart, such as heart attack, hypertension and heart valve disease. This explanation is presented by Caroline Reigada, a nephrologist with a specialization in Internal Medicine from the Irmandade da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo, and in Nephrology from the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo.
Transplant queue
According to information provided by Brazilian Association of Organ Transplants (ABTO), until March 2023, the state of São Paulo had a waiting list with 20,288 individuals waiting for an organ transplant procedure. Of this total, at least 184 people were looking forward to heart transplant surgery. In addition, the data revealed that more than 300 children were expected to receive a transplant, including 28 of them who needed a heart.
The data also reveal that, in the first quarter of this year, that is, from January to March, 25 heart transplants were performed in São Paulo. This represents a reduction compared to the 31 heart transplant procedures performed in the same period in the previous year.
