Petrobras announced this Monday (8) that the prices of gasoline and cooking gas for distributors will be adjusted starting tomorrow (9). A liter of gasoline will increase by R$0.20, costing R$3.01. This adjustment represents a 7.11% increase in the price of gasoline. According to calculations by Warren Investimentos, this variation should result in a 2.50% increase in the price for the final consumer, impacting the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA), which measures the country's official inflation, as early as July.
Increase from Gasolina and GLP
The last adjustment carried out by Petrobras occurred in October 2023, when the price of gasoline was reduced by R$0.12, costing R$2.81 per liter. In May 2023, the oil company announced a change to its pricing policy. Since then, the state-owned company stopped adopting the international parity policy (PPI), which adjusted the price of fuel according to variations in the dollar and the price of oil on the international market. According to Petrobras, gasoline has seen a reduction of R$0.17 in sales prices to distributors since this change.
The impact on the price of gasoline sold to the end consumer, which contains 27% ethanol in its composition, should be R$0.15 per liter. However, The amount charged at gas stations varies depending on each retailer, as the profit margins of the trader and distributor are included, in addition to transportation costs. In relation to cooking gas (LPG), the price will increase by R$3.10 per 13 kg cylinder (9.81%), now costing R$34.70. The last adjustment in the price of bottled gas occurred on July 1, 2023, when there was a reduction of 3.9%. The last significant increase of 24.9% occurred on March 11, 2022.
Economic Impacts
Economically, the increase in gasoline prices can generate inflationary pressure, affecting not only the cost of living of citizens, but also the operating costs of several companies, especially those that depend on road transport. Sectors such as food and logistics may feel the immediate impact of this adjustment, which could be reflected in prices for the final consumer.
According to Ativa Investimentos, the increases are expected to have an impact of 3.4% on the price of gasoline and 3.1% on LPG for end consumers. As a result of these increases, the broker revised its forecast for the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) from 4.0% to 4.2% in 2024. According to a statement from the institution, these increases are expected to be reflected in consumer prices in the second half of July, with the first impact being observed in the IPCA of the same month.
