The Organization of American States (OAS) intensified pressure on the Venezuelan government, and approved a resolution demanding the publication of the minutes with the results of the elections. On Friday afternoon (16), the organization's members met to vote on a new resolution on the political situation in Venezuela. The approved text emphasizes the need for Venezuela to respect the principle of popular sovereignty and allow impartial verification of election results, with the aim of guaranteeing transparency and legitimacy to the electoral process.

Resolution

The resolution was approved with the intention of promoting greater clarity and honesty in Venezuelan elections, a step considered crucial to restoring confidence in the country's democratic system. However, the practical applicability of the text faces significant challenges. Venezuela left the Organization of American States (OAS) in 2019, an act that complicated the possibility of implementing any resolutions or recommendations of the entity. Furthermore, in January of that year, the OAS Permanent Council had decided not to recognize the Nicolás Maduro regime, in a demonstration of discontent with the country's political and electoral management.

Given that Venezuela is no longer an active member of the OAS, the entity's decisions and recommendations, such as the current resolution, lack direct enforcement or oversight mechanisms over Venezuelan territory. Therefore, despite the approval of the resolution, the real impact on Venezuela's political and electoral scenario may be limited, reflecting the complexities of international politics and relations between nations. The approved text reinforces the importance of electoral transparency, but its scope and effectiveness will be largely influenced by the country's political situation and international relations.

The document was presented by the United States with the support of Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Canada, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Paraguay, Dominican Republic, Suriname and Uruguay. In addition to publishing the minutes, the resolution requests that Venezuela respect human rights and fundamental freedoms, without reprisals. The text emphasizes that the Venezuelan government must act more rigorously to ensure the exercise of political rights, without "arbitrary arrests and arrests." Dozens of people were detained during protests against the election results.

The resolution also recognizes the participation of Venezuelan voters in the July 28 elections. It requests that political and social actors, including authorities, refrain from actions that could compromise a peaceful solution to the crisis. Furthermore, it asks the Venezuelan government to guarantee the protection of diplomatic institutions, including embassies and consulates that welcome asylum seekers. The resolution also requires election authorities to preserve equipment used in elections, as well as printed results.

Venezuelan elections

Elections in Venezuela culminated with the National Electoral Council declaring Nicolás Maduro the winner. However, the opposition claimed that Edmundo González obtained a significant victory, based on the minutes printed by the polls. The Organization of American States (OAS) did not recognize the result and released an observer report pointing to signs of manipulation by Maduro's government. Last year, Maduro announced that Venezuela had withdrawn from the OAS "never to return." This Friday, a group made up of the United States, the European Union and 21 other countries released a joint statement asking the National Electoral Council of Venezuela to publish the electoral records.
