1. Types of Kindness

Yorgos Lanthimos recently released the film Poor Things, and has already completed another work, which consists of three dark and comical short stories titled Types of Kindness (Kinds of Kindness). Each tale is Set in a mysterious version of present-day America and features the same actors playing different roles, including Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau and Mamoudou Athie. The script, written by Efthimis Filippou, a collaborator on Lanthimos's first films, returns to its scary roots, but with hints of humor.
Critic Peter DeBruge, from the entertainment newspaper Variety, describes the work as an intriguing mix that seeks to confuse and enchant, structured like a binge through three episodes of a nihilistic version of the Twilight Zone.
“This long and scaldingly original, captivating as it frustrates, defies conventional logic while presenting an absurd riff on modern society," said the critic.
Released on June 21st in the USA, the film premiered on Brazilian screens on the same day June 21th.
2. I am: Celine Dion

Anyone who remembers the release of Titanic in 1997 will remember the theme song, My Heart Will Go On, performed by Celine Dion. This powerful song was awarded an Oscar and a Grammy, becoming the best-selling single of 1998 - one of Dion's many hits. However, more recently, She has been dealing with a rare neurological disorder called Stiff Person Syndrome., which causes muscle stiffness and spasms, preventing it from working.
Irene Taylor's documentary explores how Dion has faced this situation. According to the singer, the last few years have been a great challenge, from the moment she discovered her medical condition to learning to live with it and manage it. However, she maintains that she hasn't allowed it to define her. Dion decided to document this phase of her life as she seeks to resume her artistic career, with the aim of helping others facing the same diagnosis. The documentary is scheduled to premiere on June 25th, on the Amazon Prime streaming platform.
3. Funny Mind 2

In 2015, the film Inside Out, by Pete Docter, brought the story of Riley, a young woman who was sad about moving house. The film showed us all the emotions that were fighting inside his mind: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. The Pixar hit ended with Riley becoming a teenager, so it was inevitable that teenage angst would be the main theme of the sequel. "Inside Out 2" introduces new emotions such as Embarrassment, Boredom, Envy and Anxiety.
The film's director, Kelsey Mann, said the new story addresses how we deal with anxiety, focusing on staying in the present and worrying less about the future, just worrying about "Okay." Disney Pixar's animation seeks to convey the idea of learning to control anxiety, which is what is currently happening. The film can be watched from June 20th in cinemas.
4. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1

Kevin Costner has directed two notable Westerns: "Open Range" and the Oscar-winning "Dances with Wolves." Now, that number has increased to three... or maybe four. And soon, there could be five or six. As the title suggests, "Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1" is just the beginning of Costner's new Western epic, a work in which he plays multiple papers, including co-author, producer and financier. Chapter 2 is scheduled to be released in August, and Costner is already planning two more follow-up chapters.
Set on the 19th-century American frontier, the film offers an immersive account of life at the time, with Costner playing a wandering gunslinger, Sienna Miller as a widowed mother, Sam Worthington as a fearless army captain, and other talent. Although it didn't please everyone - The Film Stage's Rory O'Connor describes "Horizon" as a classic Western, told with the quiet cadence of a limited series, and offering a vast, sweeping vision as wide as the horizon itself. . The film will be released on June 28, 2024 in cinemas around the world, including Brazil.
5. Bad Boys: Ride or Die

Will Smith has been relatively absent from the screen since the incident with Chris Rock moments before winning the Oscar for best actor in 2022. However, he is now returning to the cinematic scene with "Bad Boys: Ride or Die), the fourth chapter of the iconic saga Miami police. Surprisingly, it's been 29 years since Smith and Martin Lawrence starred in the first "Bad Boys" (with Lawrence leading at the box office), but Smith assures that this latest foray for "Middle-Aged Men" has a deeper motivation than that. simply keep the brand alive - or repair its image.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Smith stated, "This movie needs to feel like it has earned the right to exist in the current moment." The actor shared his distaste for sequels that seem like mere repetitions of past glories. In "Ride or Die", they are exploring creative scenes quite aggressively... Smith explained that they wanted to transcend the limits of life experience and age specificity that can be portrayed in these films... He mentioned that there is a spiritual component involved in this. Bad Boys: Until the End hits theaters on June 6th.
6. A Quiet Place: Day One

The film A Quiet Place, directed by John Krasinski, told the story of a family hiding on a farm while facing voracious aliens. In the sequel, they venture outside the house, but in this sequel, written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (known for Pig with Nicolas Cage), we are transported to the chaos that ensues when these creatures land in New York from space.
Lupita Nyong'the and Djimon Hounsou stars, the latter reprising his role from A Quiet Place: Part Two. "What I really appreciated about the first two movies was that," Sarnoski told Entertainment Weekly. "Of course, they're monster movies, they're scary and suspenseful, but at the core, they are stories about people dealing with something they are unprepared for. We wanted to focus on that, but in a unique way.”
7. Great Sertão

We cannot fail to mention the national films, especially one awaited by fans: "Great Sertão". Directed by Guel Arraes (known as "O Auto da Compadecida"), this film adapts the work of the same name by Guimarães Rosa, transporting the backlands to an urban setting where police and robbers confront each other, challenging definitions of right and wrong. With outstanding performances by Caio Blat and Eduardo Sterblitch, the film stands out as a reference in national cinema this month.
The plot presents a dystopian Brazil, where a community is surrounded by an immense wall and controlled by security forces in constant conflict with local factions. When a teacher witnesses one of his students being shot, he begins to question his worldview and his role in this perpetual conflict around him. “Great Sertão” hits the big screen on June 6th.
8. Eve's Ring

Showing Brazil's investment in suspense, this film narrates the journey of a woman named Eva, who, after the death of her adoptive father, receives a reliquary containing various objects and a note instructing her to open it only in emergencies. Her curiosity leads her to discover among the artifacts a ring engraved with the Nazi coat of arms and the name "Eva, 1945", along with photos of a black woman who appears to be her biological mother.
Determined to uncover the truth, she comes across Martin Hirsch (played by Odilon Wagner), an elderly German who holds the answers she is looking for, but whose revelation could put his life in danger. With the performance of Susana Pires, "Eva's Ring" hits the big screen on June 13th.
9. Bandit: Number One

Another national cinematographic release promises to shake up the screens. In the plot of this film, we meet Rebeca (played by Maria Bomani), whose life began marked by a dark agreement: At the age of nine, her grandmother handed her over to a drug dealer in Rocinha. Over the years, amidst the growing territorial dispute between bicheiros and drug dealers, destiny reserves an unexpected role for her: after the death of the man who controlled her, she sees herself as the community's widow, forced to take control of a of the country's main strongholds.
Inspired by the true story of the first woman to lead drug trafficking in Rocinha during the 1980s, this film had its premiere in the favela itself and hit theaters on June 20th.
