Giovane Gávio, two-time Olympic champion, suffers serious accident during trip to SC
The former athlete and current president of Joinville Vôlei, Giovane Gávio, two-time Olympic champion, suffered an accident on BR-280, in Canoinhas. He had minor injuries and returned to Rio de Janeiro, according to the club's press office.

Former volleyball player Giovane Gávio, two-time Olympic champion and one of the greatest legends of Brazilian sport, suffered an accident while traveling to Santa Catarina. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon (8), when the vehicle Giovane was in was involved in a collision with at least two vehicles on the BR-280 in Canoinhas, in the northern region of the state. He left Joinville, in the same region, and was heading to a lecture in Chapecó, in the west of the state.

The collision involved at least two vehicles. According to the press office of Joinville Vôlei, chaired by Young, the medalist was not injured and chose to postpone the event to return to Rio de Janeiro, his hometown. The Federal Highway Police reported that the accident occurred between a Chevrolet Agile and a Jeep Renegade, the latter driven by Giovane. The former athlete refused medical attention at the scene.
The two occupants of the other vehicle, the 25-year-old driver and 67-year-old passenger, suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for further examination. According to a note from Joinville Vôlei, the accident happened around 2 pm in the town of Rio d’Areia. Although he refused medical attention, Giovane remained at the scene to provide information to the authorities.

“The president of Joinville Vôlei, Giovane Gávio, was involved in a collision with two other vehicles this Friday afternoon (16) when he was traveling along BR-280, in Canoinhas, in the North Planalto of the State.
Giovane was traveling to the city of Chapecó, where he would give a lecture this Saturday (17). He was not injured in the accident and remained at the scene to provide information to the authorities.
The accident occurred around 2 pm, in the town of Rio d’Areia.
On Thursday (15), Giovane was in Joinville participating in the presentation of the new Joinville Vôlei team for the 2024/25 season.
The president of Joinville is currently returning to Rio de Janeiro where he lives with his family.”

Giovane Gávio is widely recognized for his contribution to Brazilian volleyball. Throughout his career, Giovane won several titles, including gold medals at the Olympic Games (1992 and 2004), as well as triumphs at world and Pan-American championships. His technical ability and leadership on the court were fundamental to the success of the Brazilian team, consolidating his reputation as one of the great names in world volleyball. After retiring from the court, Giovane continued to be an influential figure in the sport, and began to act as a commentator and coach, continuing to contribute to the sport, as well as being involved in social projects.
