The Nuggets are one of the most popular foods in the world, enjoyed by people of all ages. These fried chicken pieces are delicious, but did you know they have a fascinating culinary history?
How did it come about?
The first Nuggets were created in the 1950s by Robert C.Baker, a food scientist professor at Cornell University, and published as an unpatented scholarly work. They were invented to take advantage of parts of the chicken that were not used in other dishes, such as wings and giblets. The original Nuggets were handmade and were often lumpy, which caused some of them to be larger than others.
Popularity
In the early 1970s, the Nuggets gained popularity and have been added to the menu of several fast food chains. Back then, they were made on a production line, which ensured they were all the same size and shape. Over time, the popularity of the Nuggets spread around the world, reaching countries like Brazil, where they gained a spicy version, and China, where they were introduced for the first time in 1990. Nowadays, many fast food restaurants offer vegetarian and gluten-free Nuggets options, to meet the demand of a more diverse audience.
