Former player Dunga and wife are injured after a car rolls over in Paraná

The Federal Highway Police reported that the former athlete and his wife were rescued conscious and taken to the hospital. The accident occurred amid heavy rain.

Former player and coach of the Brazilian national team Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, known as Dunga, and his wife, Evanir Nadir Bledorn Verri, were injured in a car accident that occurred this Saturday (13) on BR-116, in Campina Grande do Sul, Metropolitan Region of Curitiba (RMC), in Paraná. According to preliminary reports, the vehicle driven by Dunga left the road and overturned due to heavy rain at the time of the accident. Both were promptly rescued and taken to a local hospital to receive medical treatment. The hospital said it cannot release details about the victims' health status.

According to information from the Federal Highway Police (PRF), The accident occurred around 12:30 pm at km 39, when the vehicle left the road. The couple on board suffered only minor injuries and remained conscious during treatment. They were taken to Angelina Caron Hospital, in Campina Grande do Sul. After carrying out a breathalyzer test, the PRF confirmed that both occupants of the vehicle were not under the influence of alcohol. According to André Filgueira, PRF spokesperson in Paraná, Dunga and his wife were traveling from São Paulo to Curitiba when the car overturned.

"The rollover occurred near the Capivari Reservoir, a very winding stretch, with many curves. The driver (Dunga) lost control, hit the side of the highway and overturned," said the spokesperson.

Dunga, 60 years old, is a well-known figure in the world of Brazilian football, having a distinguished career as a player and also as coach of the Brazilian national team. Dunga began his career as a player at Internacional, from Porto Alegre (RS), during the 1980s. In addition to Internacional, he played for other Brazilian clubs such as Corinthians and Vasco da Gama, and also had spells at clubs in Italy, Germany and Japan.

He stood out as captain of the Brazilian team during their fourth title at the 1994 World Cup in the United States. Dunga also participated in the 1990 and 1998 World Cups, but failed to repeat the title. As a coach, he led the team at the 2010 World Cup, where they were eliminated by the Netherlands. He had a second spell leading the team in 2014, but was not as successful and was fired in 2016.
