The Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa) concluded, this Monday (12), the first stage of the investigation into the tragic crash of the airline's ATR-72-500 plane VoePass in Vinhedo, São Paulo, which resulted in the deaths of 62 people. As the investigation progressed to the second stage, Voepass, the airline involved in the accident, and the insurance company, began the cleaning and recovery process of the affected area to collect the victims' personal effects and deliver them to their families. The company highlighted that it is fully cooperating with the authorities and has implemented measures to ensure the safety and integrity of the site during the operation.

Belongings of Victims and Aircraft Wreckage

According to Maurício Barone, director of Civil Defense, the personal belongings of the 58 passengers and four crew members who died in the country's biggest air disaster since 2007 will be examined by the Civil Police. Barone explained that the airline and insurance company are taking responsibility for the wreckage site. In addition, the Federal Police and Civil Defense agents will also be involved in removing the victims' personal items. He highlighted that this process will be conducted with technical and legal criteria, aiming to ensure that each family receives the belongings of their loved ones, requiring meticulous work and a specialized team.

According to Vinhedo Civil Defense, the complete removal of the plane's wreckage, which will also be carried out by the airline, will only occur after the removal of personal objects. The forecast for completion of this work is between Wednesday (14) and Thursday (15). However, if genetic materials are found, the service will be stopped.

Plane Crash Area

The director of Vinhedo Civil Defense declared that the plane that crashed in the backyard of a house in the Recanto Florido condominium impacted that residence and two other neighboring properties. However, the structural impact can only be assessed after cleaning is completed, according to the agency. Voepass informed that it is awaiting a visit from the Criminalistics Institute (IC), which requested a new inspection of the area. Additionally, the airline hired a specialized company to remove personal belongings and carry out decontamination, cataloging and identification of the items.

Continuity of Investigations

According to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), after completing the "initial action" at the site, Cenipa continues investigations to "collect additional necessary information" and identify possible contributing factors to the plane crash. Cenipa, in collaboration with representatives from the Office of Investigations and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety of France, the country that manufactured the ATR-72 aircraft, removed the plane's two engines for analysis in São Paulo. In addition, the wings and tail have also been raised. Cenipa also reported that it managed to extract all the contents of the plane's two black boxes. The preliminary report on the causes of the air disaster is expected to be released within 30 days.

Release of bodies

Of the 62 people on board Voepass flight 2283, 17 bodies have been successfully identified so far, and eight of them have already been handed over to their families. The government of São Paulo, through a statement, released this information and highlighted the efforts of the teams involved in identifying the victims. According to the note, with most families already providing genetic materials and participating in interviews, the process of identifying and releasing the bodies should accelerate in the coming days.

The São Paulo Civil Defense has played a crucial role in this process, helping to collect DNA and catalog data on the deceased. To date, the Oscar Freire Institute, located close to the IML in the west of São Paulo, has received 51 families, who have been instructed to provide detailed information and biological samples to help experts. In addition to the collections in the capital of São Paulo, another 17 families were served in Cascavel (PR), the city where the aircraft originated. These efforts are part of a coordinated operation involving more than 40 doctors, as well as experts in forensic dentistry, anthropology and radiology, all committed to ensuring the accurate identification of each victim.
