Draw defines groups for the 2024 Libertadores and Sul-Americana; See how the groups fared in the competitions

This season, the South American organization plans to distribute 1.5 billion in prizes to the victorious teams. Brazil will be present with seven teams in each competition.

A Conmebol held on Monday night (18) in Luque, Paraguay, the long-awaited draw that determined the groups for the most prestigious competitions in South America in 2024: the Libertadores and the Sul-Americana. For this season, the main authority of South American football announced an increase in the prize pool to be distributed in all its competitions. The revised amount is R$1.5 billion, exceeding the R$1.4 billion granted in the previous year.

In the Copa Libertadores da América, Brazil will be represented by seven teams in this initial phase: Atlético-MG, Botafogo, Flamengo, Fluminense, Grêmio, Palmeiras and São Paulo. It is important to highlight that no clashes between Brazilian teams are planned in the group stage. According to the established rules, teams from the same country do not face each other during the group stage, except those that advance from the preliminary stages. The two best placed in each group will advance to the round of 16, while third place will have the opportunity to compete in the Copa Sudamericana.

Libertadores Dates and Prizes

The Libertadores group stage begins in the first week of April, with matches scheduled between the 2nd and 4th. The final stage will be played between the 28th and 30th of May. The city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, will host the 2024 Copa Libertadores final, although the stadium has not yet been confirmed. The game is scheduled for November 30th. Since 2019, the single-match decision format has been adopted. The winning team will receive a prize of US$33.05 million (R$166.2 million), an increase of five million dollars compared to the prize awarded to the winner of the previous year's final. The main change occurred in the prize allocated to the champion of the final, which went from US$ 18 million to US$ 23 million.

Na Sul-Americana,Brazil will also have seven teams in the first phase: Athletico, Bragantino, Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Cuiabá, Fortaleza and Internacional. In the Copa Sudamericana regulations, as well as in the Copa Libertadores, teams from the same country do not face each other during the group stage.Each participating team will play six matches in this initial stage. The leaders of each group guarantee a direct place in the round of 16. The teams that finish second in the groups will face the third placed teams in the Libertadores groups in the knockout stages. The winners of these clashes will also advance to the round of 16 of the South American Championship.

South American Championship Dates and Awards

The group stage will begin in the first week of April, with matches scheduled between the 2nd and 4th, while the final stage will take place between the 28th and 30th of May. The playoffs, involving the second-placed teams from the Sul-Americana and the third-placed teams from the Libertadores, are scheduled to take place from July 17th to 24th. The round of 16 is scheduled to take place between August 14th and 21st, followed by the quarterfinals, which will be played between September 18th and 25th. The semi-finals are scheduled for October 23rd and 30th.

The grand final will be held on November 23, in a single match, with the location not yet revealed by Conmebol. In addition to the coveted trophy up for grabs, the 2024 Copa Sudamericana also had significant adjustments to its prizes. The winner of this year's tournament will be awarded an amount greater than the R$25 million awarded in the final, in addition to the R$40 million allocated to the tournament as a whole.
