Brazil reaches a historic milestone, marking a significant moment of change in its journey towards a more sustainable energy matrix. While hydroelectric plants continue to be the main source of generation, production from wind and solar plants registered an increase of 23.4%.

In a historic feat for the Brazilian energy matrix, data released this Friday (02) for the Electricity Trading Chamber (CCEE) revealed that Brazil reached the impressive milestone of 93.1% of its energy coming from renewable sources in 2023. This milestone represents not only a significant advance towards sustainability, but also places the country as a global leader in the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix.

Last year, total energy production reached 70.2 thousand average megawatts (MWm), coming from hydroelectric, wind, solar and biomass plants. Hydroelectric plants were responsible for more than half of energy generation in 2023, reaching 50 thousand MWm, an increase of 1.2% compared to 2022. In turn, wind and solar generation plants combined reached 13 thousand MWm, representing a growth of 23.8% compared to 2022.

"The advance was driven by the favorable climate scenario, especially for the production of solar energy, and by the entry of new plants into the National Interconnected System", states the CCEE report.

The Growth of Renewable Sources

Achieving this milestone is the result of strategic investments in renewable sources, such as solar, wind and biomass, over recent years. Brazil has been actively exploring its abundant natural resource potential to boost clean energy production and reduce dependence on non-renewable sources. The new production facilities increased the country's total capacity by 42,600 megawatts, equivalent to three times the capacity of the Itaipu Plant.

Furthermore, energy generation from biomass, especially sugarcane bagasse, reached 3.2 megawatts, registering an increase of 9.6% compared to the previous year. Alexandre Ramos, president of the CCEE Board of Directors, predicts that in the coming years the expansion of the free energy market for all high voltage, already in operation since January, will further boost demand for renewable energy sources.

The Chamber of Commerce signals a significant increase of 63.9% in distributed generation, where consumers generate their own energy, mainly through solar panels installed on the roofs of their homes. This amount of energy is integrated into the local distributor’s network. Also according to the CCEE, if there was no distributed generation, residential and small business consumption in 2023 would have been 5.9%, instead of the recorded 2.5%. Last Thursday (1st), CCEE announced a 3.7% increase in energy consumption in Brazil, the highest in recent years. Heatwaves in the previous year are seen as the main driver of this increase in demand.

Clean Energy Sources

Solar Energy: The Brightness of the Future

Solar energy played a fundamental role in this advancement, contributing significantly to the increase in the share of renewable sources in the Brazilian energy matrix. The massive installation of solar plants in different regions of the country demonstrates the commitment to the diversification of the matrix and the search for sustainable sources.

Favorable Winds for Wind Energy

Furthermore, wind energy, taking advantage of favorable winds in several coastal and inland areas, has been another protagonist in this transition scenario. Modern wind farms have stood out not only for their efficiency in generating electricity, but also for reducing environmental impacts.

Biomass: A Sustainable Source

Biomass also played a crucial role, taking advantage of organic waste to generate energy in a clean and efficient way. The responsible use of agricultural and forestry waste contributes not only to the generation of electricity, but also to sustainable waste management.

Positive Environmental Impacts

In addition to the obvious benefits in terms of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the increased participation of renewable sources in the Brazilian energy matrix has direct impacts on the preservation of biodiversity and the mitigation of environmental disasters associated with the exploitation of non-renewable resources.

Global Leadership

Reaching the milestone of 93% in energy from renewable sources in 2023 places Brazil in a prominent position on the global stage. The country not only stands out as an example for other nations, but also reinforces its commitment to the objectives established in international agreements on climate change and sustainability.
