Brazil carries out first military exercise in Goiás with the participation of Chinese and American troops
In 2023, observers from China and the US had already participated in the operation. The direct participation of US and Chinese troops in Operation Formosa 2024 is a historic milestone, as noted by the Navy.

Brazil began its first large-scale military exercise with the participation of foreign troops, bringing together armed forces from the United States and China in Goiás. More than 3,000 Brazilian soldiers were mobilized for joint training with troops from the United States, China and other nations. According to the Navy, which coordinates the operation, exercises with foreign forces are common, but this will be the first time that Chinese troops have participated.
In 2023, observers from China and the US were present, but only the United States sent a constituted contingent of troops. In Operation Formosa 2024, both countries will have, for the first time, constituted troops participating. According to the Force, the invitation to personnel from other countries aims to improve the exchange of military experiences between friendly nations.
The Brazilian Military Exercise and Participating Countries
The practice of inviting friendly nations to participate in exercises is common and aims to promote greater integration between the Brazilian Navy and the forces of these countries. This year, Operation Formosa 2024 will feature the participation of 10 friendly nations, allowing for a rich exchange of knowledge and experiences. Recognized as the largest military exercise in the Central Plateau region, this year's Operation Formosa also marks the debut of the inclusion of women soldiers and marines.
The Army and Air Force also participate in the operation, which has been taking place since 1988. The training, carried out at the Formosa Instruction Field (GO), a city in Goiás near the Federal District, uses live ammunition. This year, the operation began on Wednesday (4) and runs until the 17th. According to the Navy's Marine Corps (CFN), in addition to Chinese and North American troops, the operation is attended by observers from eight other countries: South Africa, Argentina, France, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan and the Republic of Congo.
Functioning and Armaments Used in the Operation
The Navy reports that invited military personnel participate in experience exchange workshops, known as Subject Matter Expert Exchange. The training simulates an amphibious operation, which is one of the most complex military actions. The objective is to ensure the readiness of Marines and improve coordination between the Navy, Army and Air Force. The military exercise uses live ammunition and aims to prepare soldiers for various actions, including fire support, airspace control, command and control, as well as maneuver and logistics.
Taking part in the training are aircraft, tanks, armored and amphibious vehicles, artillery and missile and rocket launchers, which traveled more than 1,400 kilometers between Rio de Janeiro and Goiás. Among the equipment used are the Amphibious Lizard Car (CLAnf), the JLTV and Guarani armored vehicles, the Astros system, in addition to the AF-1 Skyhawk, KC-390, Super Tucano and R-99 aircraft.
Helicopter incident in Operation Formosa 2023
During the 2023 exercises, a Navy helicopter crash resulted in deaths and injuries. The aircraft, carrying 12 soldiers, crashed, killing two crew members and leaving 10 injured. The then Minister of Defense, José Múcio, was surprised to see the wreckage, commenting that it was incredible that anyone had survived. He highlighted that the incident highlights the dangers of military exercises and the importance of these operations for the preparation and integration of the armed forces.
