Amid continued political polarization in the United States, a survey published this Monday (05) revealed that almost half of the North American population is eager for a verdict regarding accusations of electoral subversion against former president Donald Trump before the November elections. Meanwhile, a quarter of US citizens express disbelief that Trump will face repercussions if he is defeated for a second time by Joe Biden, according to a poll commissioned by CNN.

Accusations of subversion against Trump have been a central issue in political circles since his term in office. Allegations of interference in democratic processes, unethical behavior and questions about the legitimacy of his actions have echoed since the end of his government. The current political climate in the US is a mix of fervent support and scathing criticism, with many seeing the November elections as a defining moment for the country's future.

The former president faces more than 90 criminal charges, including allegations of illegal attempts to overturn his loss to Biden, improper withholding of government secrets after leaving the White House, and illicit hush money payments to an adult film actor who claimed to have had an extramarital sexual encounter with Trump. The research concluded that, If Trump is convicted of a crime, the five-point lead he has would turn into a two-point lead for Biden. Trump has maintained he is innocent of all charges.
Last Friday (02), US District Judge Tanya Chutkan formally postponed the federal election interference case against Trump, over whom she presides. Originally scheduled to begin in March, the date has been postponed while an appeals court in Washington D.C. reviews arguments from Trump's legal team, which claims he is immune from prosecution for actions taken during his term as president. If the Washington D.C. appeals court denies Trump's appeal, he is likely to appeal to the United States Supreme Court, resulting in further delays in the legal process.
The public's desire for a resolution of this case before the November elections comes as recent Bloomberg polls indicate that a majority of voters in seven key states would be unwilling to vote for Trump if he is convicted of a crime (53% ) or sentenced to prison (55%) in one of the four cases against him in total. However, according to CNN, views on Trump's efforts to remain in office despite his 2020 defeat remain unchanged as of the summer of 2022. About 45% of US adults say he acted illegally, 32% unethically and 23% claim he did nothing wrong.
